I was literally losing sleep over What to Wear to Henry's birthday party tomorrow, when it dawned on me: Seek counsel from Emily Richards of What to Wear This Very Second.
Brilliant.
Check out today's post "To a birthday party" for her illustrated answer to my wardrobe dilemma.
She is a genius. If only she could do this for me on a daily basis.
And P.S. - How did she know I am planning to wear my hair straight tomorrow? A talented illustrator AND telepathic?
One of my favorite features in Lucky is the one where they profile one person and show a week in the life of their wardrobe. I am hoping (rather foolishly) that someday they'll pick me. I'm pretty sure that I have zero chance since a person who wears a black pant + top combo to work every day, and PJ pants all weekend is not all that interesting. But just in case.
Monday. The week awaits and I am wearing Peter Som:

It's amazing how I don't look one bit hungover on my way to Books + Booze Sunday morning:
My friend (and fellow-pug Mom) Lisa turned me on to Glam, a great site "presenting the best in fashion and beauty."
I definitely encourage everyone to stop by, explore a bit (a bunch!) and take their "What's your trademark style" quiz. It's mucho fun. They even make recommendations based on your results!
My trademark style? I thought you'd never ask!
"Eclectic: You’re a bit quirky and always out for an element of surprise with your style, mixing up retro and vintage elements with contemporary bohemian styles. Breezy fabrics, flowing cuts, and unique accessories help you achieve an enviably original and diverse appearance every day. You fashion maverick, you. "
[dead on]
And you know I love this Antik Batik bag they suggested for me.
[You should always buy things when people go to the trouble of suggesting them for you, its rude not to!]
I am quickly losing confidence in Gap Corp.
Exhibit One: They decide to update their website at the start of the Fall Shopping Season. (Why didn't they just wait until the holidays?)
Exhibit Two: Under WHOSE DEFINITION does this jacket qualify as a capelet?
It has sleeves. Isn't the very definition of a cape, "that without sleeves"? And a capelet is just a littler version of a cape? Sleeves do not a capelet make.
If you don't believe me, see Dictionary.com

Exhibits Three and Four: What in God's Name has gone awry in the Gap Accessories Department?
Okay, don't get me wrong, I adore the purple leather bag. But why, WHY?? would they put that HUGE silver buckle on it that says "Gap Jeans" WHY DO COMPANIES ALWAYS RUIN OTHERWISE CUTE THINGS WITH THIS EXTRANEOUS NONSENSE? (H&M, are you listening?)
I'm not really sure that I can bring myself to comment on these. I don't mind the style, it's more the shiny patent finish and the lackluster yellow color that makes me cringe.
Maybe the boukie has gone to their heads?
Could someone please tell me how I did not know about Fashion Fantasy League? Thank God for Jessica Lee Jernigan!
[Nostalgic chic? Really? I kind of like that.]
It truly keeps getting better and better.

Has anyone noticed my affinity for [no, obsession with] mix and match?

Very helpful. Not.
After very brief visits to Urban Outfitters last week and Zara and the Gap last night, I was inspired to re-visit my fall clothing shopping list.
A few color inspirations:
Shoes:
-Cowboy boots
-clog / moccasin type shoes for bumming around
-cute peep toe heels to be worn with jeans
- New Ugg like for cold, snowy weather
-Black knee-high boots for fancy / sexy
Bags:
-big number in fab color that I can throw a lot of stuff into
-maybe some cool vintage finds in the EV or Williamsburg [UPDATE: 9/1/05: went to EV last weekend was unsuccessful in locating; perhaps W-Burg will be more fruitful]
Tops:
-long sleeve tees and layering numbers
- a few sweaters that don't make me look chunky
-a few blazers / cropped jackets in cool colors / patterns [UPDATE 9/1/05: Zara and Urban Outfitters are promising]
-camis [UPDATE 9/1/05: Express is having a sale and they have some really cute camis that are $14.50 a piece; will pick up one or three tonight after Grizzly Man]
-coat (preferably yellow or green) [UPDATE 9/1/05: have also become obsessed with idea of grey coat, navy coat [from Diane T?] and leather bomber jacket; thus want 5 coats for fall/winter 2005; justifying based on: fall/winter is very cold in NYC, practically live in coats all season; plus do not want other people to get sick of looking at my same coat every day - being benevolent]
Bottoms:
-jeans, jeans, jeans
-[ADDED 9/1/05] cropped pants in tweed, herringbone, etc, to be worn with boots and peep toe heels
-work stuff (pants, etc) [UPDATE 9/1/05: Definitely need some new work "bottoms"...and tops; need work stuff in general, or need to convince leading investment bank to change wardrobe policy to: "casual"]
Accessories: [ADDED 9/1/05]
-fedora
-more big chunky scarves, yes i have a million, but see justification for "coat" above
-colorful tights (see scrapbook)
[ps: I'm not getting Lucky today after all]
Project: Starting my list of Things I Need for Fall 2005 and beyond:**
Shoes:
-Cowboy boots
-clog / moccasin type shoes for bumming around
-cute peep toe heels to be worn with jeans
- New Ugg like for cold, snowy weather
-Black knee-high boots for fancy / sexy
Bags:
-big number in fab color that I can throw a lot of stuff into
-maybe some cool vintage finds in the EV or Williamsburg
Tops:
-long sleeve tees and layering numbers
- a few sweaters that don't make me look chunky
-a few blazers / cropped jackets in cool colors / patterns
-camis
-coat (preferably yellow or green)
Bottoms:
-jeans, jeans, jeans
Oh yeah and work stuff (pants, etc) which I always manage to forget -- maybe in my next life, I will have a job I can wear jeans to.
Target stores: DSW for footwear, Gap, Old Navy, H&M, Zara, Warehouse, Urban, Anthro for all others
Issues: funding for aforementioned project (Pls send suggestions; Benefactors welcome)
**Subject to Change (after reading Lucky....TOMORROW!!)
I'll admit it. I have always loved the Olson Twins style (until their recent foray into homeless-chic). But are they my shopping match? Here is what Teen Vogue had to say:
June/July 2005 mary-kate and ashley olsen GEMINI (JUNE 13)
Like all Geminis, the Olsen twins dabble in a bit of everything. And that's not just in regard to their mini media empire. They add a sophisticated twist (like an oversize Balenciaga bag) to their boho style—Mary-Kate mixed vintage with designers, while Ashley prefers glam, keeping an urban edge with lots of layers.
Scorpio:
The twins are going through a black-and-white phase (inspired by the fall YSL show, perhaps), but you're on the hunt for brights. Can you agree to disagree? Yes, if you learn to appreciate Ashley's ability to snag the most coveted handbag of the summer and Mary-Kate's soft spot for Anna Sui. But a word of caution: You may want to shop with each of them separately to keep your spending in check—otherwise, you may find yourself in the red.
(Too late).
These are the things I am looking forward to wearing this spring:
*bermuda shorts
*wedge heels
*big beads
*stuff with birds on it
*little fitted jackets
*big suede bags
*bigger sunglasses
*green
I have been obsessed with finding a little fitted jacket (or three) for spring. I have seen them on fashionistas all over town. This weekend, I found two fabulous little jackets at Zara. One is an off-white number with metallic thread and the other is Missoni-esque with a perfectly placed button at the collar. And it is green, to boot.
Little jackets make me very happy.
